RAISING THE BAR: TYSON SYBATELI ON PURPOSE, GROWTH AND INSPIRING THE NEXT GENERATION

As part of the Sunlight Raise The Bar: NextGen campaign, Tyson Sybateli is stepping into a space that goes beyond music, one rooted in impact, visibility, and purpose. In an exclusive conversation with The Yanos Plug, the rapper opened up about his journey, the importance of authenticity, and what it truly means to raise the bar in today’s world.

“Raising the bar is about pushing beyond what’s comfortable”

For Tyson, being part of the campaign is not just about representation; it’s about responsibility.

“What inspired me to be part of this is the impact it has,” he shares. “It’s about showing young people what’s possible and reminding them that where you start doesn’t define where you can go.”

He defines raising the bar as a personal commitment to growth.

“Raising the bar is about pushing yourself beyond what’s comfortable. Not just in your career, but in life. It’s about evolving.”

That mindset is something he actively carries into every space he steps into, from the studio to live performances, and now into schools across the country.

From Umlazi to Pretoria

Born in Umlazi and later moving to Pretoria, Tyson’s story is one of dual influence. Each environment contributed to shaping his identity, both as a person and as an artist.

“There wasn’t just one moment where I knew,” he says about choosing music. “It was a series of moments that kept confirming that this is what I’m meant to do.”

Initially drawn to science, his path shifted as creativity became impossible to ignore. Today, that foundation of discipline and curiosity still shows up in how he approaches his craft.

His upbringing also played a significant role in shaping his relationship with music. Raised in a household where different sounds and cultural influences were present, Tyson credits his parents for exposing him to a range of music early on, something that would later influence both his taste and creative direction.

“My parents played a big role in that,” he shares. “Being exposed to different kinds of music at home helped shape how I hear and approach music today.”

“If it’s not real, people can feel it”

Tyson’s music has become known for its honesty and introspection, something he considers non-negotiable.

“If it’s not real, people can feel it,” he explains. “The music has to come from a genuine place.”

Describing his sound as intentional and layered, he has built a catalogue that reflects growth, self-awareness, and lived experience. Pretoria, in particular, played a key role in refining that identity.

“Being in Pretoria exposed me to different sounds and perspectives. It helped me shape who I am creatively.”

As part of a new wave of South African hip-hop, Tyson believes this era is marked by independence and awareness.

“There’s more ownership now,” he says. “Artists understand the business side, not just the music.”

Having navigated both independent spaces and working with Sony Music Africa, he highlights the importance of balance, knowing how to move within the industry without losing your identity.

“The key is staying grounded in who you are. That’s how you maintain authenticity.”

Impact beyond the stage: Sunlight Raise The Bar

One of the most powerful moments for Tyson within the Sunlight Raise The Bar: NextGen campaign came during a recent school activation.

“It stood out how receptive the students were,” he says. “You realise how important it is for young people to see what’s possible.”

For him, schools are more than just academic spaces, they are environments where creativity can be nurtured.

“Schools are important because that’s where confidence starts. That’s where people begin to express themselves.”

“Take your time. Find your voice.”

When it comes to advice for young creatives, Tyson keeps it simple, but intentional.

“Take your time. Find your voice. Don’t rush to be something you’re not. Ask questions, you are closer to knowing than someone who is quiet”.

He also emphasises the importance of platforms like the campaign in shaping the future of the creative industry.

“These kinds of platforms matter. They open doors and give people opportunities they might not have had.”

Building a legacy that lasts

Beyond music, Tyson is focused on impact, on leaving something meaningful behind.

“It’s about what you leave behind,” he says. “The impact matters.”

And if there’s one message he wants the next generation to hold onto:

“Stay consistent, stay true, and trust your journey.”
