THE VISIONARY LENS: DIRECTOR BO MAQ LEADS SABC 2’S BOLD NEW ERA WITH THE PREMIERE OF ‘PIMVILLE’ TONIGHT

JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA — February 9, 2026 Tonight at 9:00 PM, South African television enters a transformative chapter with the premiere of the highly anticipated telenovela, Pimville, on SABC 2. While the star-studded cast (featuring Gail Mabalane, Mondli Makhoba, and Lillian Dube) has captured the public’s imagination, the industry’s eyes are on the man behind the visual language of the show: Director Bohlale Makgolane, professionally known as Bo Maq. For Bo Maq, directing Pimville was an exercise in cinematic truth. Rather than leaning into dated stereotypes, his lens focuses on the aspirational and modern reality of the area.

As SABC 2 reclaims its position as the “cultural heartbeat” of the nation, Bo Maq stands at the forefront of this creative reawakening. Known for his ability to blend raw authenticity with a cinematic, modern edge, Bo Maq’s direction in Pimville moves beyond traditional storytelling. He treats the iconic Soweto township not just as a backdrop, but as a living, breathing character.

“My approach was strongly guided by the story itself. The narrative is to show the beauty of Pimville with the hope that it will represent the South African township narrative,” says Bo Maq. “As a director, I focused on choosing the most aesthetically pleasing locations—framing them in a way that exposes the beauty of the basketball courts, parks, and the modernity in the newest infrastructure and buildings.”

His deep involvement in AI-generated content also shapes the director’s unique perspective. However, for Pimville, Bo Maq used his technical knowledge to double down on the one thing technology cannot yet replicate: the human soul.

“My work in the AI space definitely influenced my direction,” Bo Maq explains. “It made me emphasise elements such as raw actor performance and the creative placement of props—details that AI typically can’t achieve or replicate at the moment. It’s about that authentic human touch.”
