Scorpion Kings Live with Friends: Amapiano Royalty Light Up Pretoria

On Friday, 29 August 2025, Pretoria became the epicentre of global amapiano culture when The Scorpion Kings, DJ Maphorisa (Themba Sekowe) and Kabza De Small (Kabelo Motha), staged their much-anticipated Scorpion Kings Live with Friends concert at the iconic Loftus Versfeld Stadium.
The night was more than a concert. It was a cultural milestone, a homecoming for two Pretoria-born artists who have carried amapiano from the townships to the world’s biggest stages. With a rotating stage, world-class production, and a star-studded lineup, the Kings proved once again why they hold the crown in South Africa’s fastest-growing genre.
A Historic Venue for a Historic Night
Taking Scorpion Kings Live to Loftus Versfeld was not a small thing. The stadium, usually home to rugby clashes and international events, was transformed into a temple of music, filled with thousands of fans from across the country. The decision to host it here was deeply symbolic: not only did it mark a return home for Kabza and Maphorisa, but it also demonstrated amapiano’s ability to fill stadiums once reserved for mainstream and global acts.
Doors opened at 1 pm, with fans treated to a full-day experience including a pre-show stage of upcoming and established South African talent. By the time the main show began, anticipation had reached fever pitch.
In a powerful and emotional gesture, DJ Maphorisa’s mother opened the concert with a prayer, grounding the celebration in family and spirituality.

The Friends of the Scorpion Kings
The “with friends” concept came alive in spectacular fashion. The Scorpion Kings invited a who’s who of local and international stars, many of whom they’ve collaborated with over the years.
The lineup included:
– Young Stunna, amapiano’s voice of the new generation
– Kamo Mphela, the dance queen who set the stage ablaze
– Nkosazana Daughter, with her haunting, soulful vocals
– Daliwonga, Mawhoo, Ami Faku, and Nolwazi, each adding their signature touch
– Rap royalty Kwesta and Cassper Nyovest, bridging hip hop and amapiano cultures
– Focalistic, proudly representing the “President ya Straata” movement
– Afro-soul giants Msaki, Sjava, and Mlindo The Vocalist, the latter sharing a particularly emotional reunion with Maphorisa after their past public fallout
– Venda powerhouse Makhadzi, who brought her electrifying energy to the stage
– Nigerian superstar Davido, described by Maphorisa and Kabza as “the final perfect piece of the puzzle,” wearing a jacket adorned with the South African flag
This lineup reflected the very essence of amapiano: collaboration, inclusivity, and boundary-breaking. Each artist contributed not only their sound but also their presence to a night that felt both historic and intimate.

Some of the Moments That Defined the Festival
The Tribute to Caphius Semenya: A heartfelt dedication honoured the legendary South African musician, who was unable to attend in person. His children accepted flowers and a plaque on his behalf, while Kabza performed a moving amapiano remix of Semenya’s classics. It was a powerful reminder that amapiano stands on the shoulders of giants.
Mlindo and Maphorisa’s Reunion: Once divided by public disagreements, the two reunited on stage, performing together with emotion and warmth. The crowd erupted, a testament to the enduring power of music as a tool for reconciliation.
Davido’s Appearance: When the Nigerian megastar took the stage, it felt like a seal of amapiano’s global reach. His gesture of wearing South African colours highlighted the unity between African sounds and nations.
The Rotating Stage: Fans experienced a 360-degree view of their icons, with lighting, pyrotechnics, and visuals that rivalled any international production. It was more than music; it was an immersive, multi-sensory experience.

Partnerships that Matter
Beyond the music, the festival was carefully designed as a community celebration. Partnerships with PRASA and Gautrain ensured that fans could travel safely to and from the venue, while sponsors like Metro FM, Smirnoff Ice, GALXBOY, Betway, and the National Development Agency reinforced the blend of culture, commerce, and social impact.
Every element, from background dancers to production teams, played a seamless role, proving that behind every superstar performance is a village of creatives, technicians, and visionaries
