ALBUM REVIEW: SOUL BUDDIES BY YUMBS & ZWAYETOVEN

Renowned producers Yumbs and Zwayetoven have joined creative forces to unveil their much-anticipated joint album, Soul Buddies. Featuring an impressive 21 expertly curated tracks, this album is poised to dominate the soundscape of the upcoming festive season while solidifying its creators as some of the most influential voices in South Africa’s thriving Amapiano movement.

We at The Yanos Plug had the honour of attending the exclusive album listening session, and what an unforgettable experience it was! We are immensely grateful to the team behind this event for inviting us to celebrate a project destined to shape the musical narrative of 2024.

HOMAGE TO THE BELOVED SOUTH AFRICAN TV SERIES “SOUL BUDDYZ?

The title, Soul Buddies, is a heartwarming homage to the beloved South African TV series Soul Buddyz. It reflects the duo’s shared passion for soul-infused sounds and their strong artistic connection. Having first met at the National School of the Arts, Yumbs and Zwayetoven have used this album to weave their history and talents into a polished masterpiece.

Building on the refined, melodic vibes of ‘Private School’ Amapiano, the album strikes a delicate balance between innovation and tradition. Its lush soundscapes celebrate the evolution of the genre while honouring its roots in South African township culture.

THEMES, PRODUCTION AND COLLABORATIONS

Thematically, Soul Buddies explores love, friendship, resilience, and growth, all conveyed through a seamless blend of soulful melodies, Amapiano log drums, and contemporary African influences. The production quality is impeccable, with every beat, melody, and vocal shining in its own right. The title pays homage to the nostalgic TV show Soul Buddyz while celebrating the duo’s passion for soul music and friendship.

The album is rooted in the ‘Private School’ Amapiano sound, a soulful sub-genre of Amapiano. Tracks like School Song and Sundays Are for Lovers set the tone with lush harmonies, intricate instrumentals, and emotionally resonant melodies. This project feels as polished as it is heartfelt, with each track showcasing a unique mood while remaining cohesive.

The album boasts an impressive lineup of collaborators, including heavyweights like Nasty C, Shekhinah, Ami Faku, DBN Gogo, and more. Each artist brings their unique flair, resulting in standout moments like With You, where Nasty C and Shekhinah venture into Amapiano territory with stunning results, and Maqondisa, a high-energy anthem featuring DBN Gogo, Scotts Maphuma, and Uncool MC.

Every track offers something memorable, from the introspective and soul-infused Ubukho Bam featuring Ami Faku, to the dancefloor-ready Private Graduate with Ch’cco. Yumbs and Zwayetoven experimented with orchestral elements on the Violin Touch and a nostalgic flair on Seshego101.

A GRATEFUL REFLECTION AND HIGH EXPECTATIONS

As we reflect on this vibrant celebration of South Africa’s music culture, we applaud Yumbs and Zwayetoven’s brilliance and dedication. Their efforts have resulted in an album that’s not just a collection of songs but a cultural moment.

We also congratulate the collaborators, whose contributions elevated this project to iconic status. As the festive season approaches, we’re confident that Soul Buddies will be the soundtrack to countless memorable moments.
