Nanette on Her Journey and Latest Releases: Money Can’t Save Me and Bad

Nanette

In the spaces of Amapiano and R&B, few voices stand out as effortlessly as Nanette’s. The South African singer-songwriter, known for her deeply emotive storytelling and velvety vocals, has been making waves both locally and internationally. In this exclusive Yanos Plug interview, we dive into her musical inspirations, career-defining moments, and what the future holds for this rising star.

EARLY ASPIRATIONS: A LOVE FOR MUSIC FROM THE START

Growing up in Durban, Nanette found herself captivated by the timeless voices of Whitney Houston, Brandy, Janet Jackson, and Beyoncé. However, it was Luther Vandross’ Dance With My Father album that truly ignited her passion for music. “The song that did it for me was The Closer I Get to You by Luther Vandross and Beyoncé,” she recalls. From that moment, music became more than just a passion, it was a calling.

BAD WEATHER: A DEBUT ALBUM BORN DURING LOCKDOWN

Nanette’s debut album, Bad Weather, was both a commercial and critical success, earning her a coveted spot at number 10 on Africa’s Apple Music chart and a SAMA nomination. Created during the lockdown, the project became a deeply personal reflection of her journey. “Music was all I had when the world stopped,” she shares. “I had to finish it, no matter what.” The album remains her most vulnerable and soul-baring work to date, shaped by personal introspection and the uncertainty of the times.

For Nanette, songwriting is more than just an art, it’s therapy. “Every song in Bad Weather was deeply personal,” she admits. Her entire catalogue serves as an emotional outlet, allowing her to process past experiences and express herself fully.

FROM SINGING TO PRODUCING AND COLLABORATIONS THAT MATTER

Not content with just lending her voice to music, Nanette has also stepped into the world of production, starting with her song Wounded on SoundCloud. I’ve always been super creative,” she explains. “My mind constantly lives within the art realm, so production felt like a natural progression.

Nanette’s collaborations with Amapiano heavyweight Kelvin Momo on tracks like Fool Me and Imfula have solidified her as a force in the industry. These partnerships happen organically. “I was introduced to Kelvin Momo through a mutual friend, Baby S.O.N, and from there, the rest is history.” When working with others, she values authenticity and synergy over anything else.

Nanette is deeply involved in every aspect of her artistry, from music to visuals. “Everything about my image and brand has to be authentic to me,” she states. Whether it’s cover art, fashion, or stage presence, she ensures that every element reflects her true self.
