20 Years of Culture at Back to the City Festival 2026
To celebrate two decades of existence, organizers have pulled out all the stops. Representing the United States, critically acclaimed lyricist Ab-Soul is set to headline, bringing his globally respected catalog to the Newtown stage. He will be joined by the legendary Detroit hip-hop collective Slum Village and the highly respected underground duo Blu & Exile.

The South African roster is equally stacked. Heavyweights like Cassper Nyovest, Emtee, and Blxckie are confirmed to perform alongside seasoned veterans such as Stogie T, Reason, Tuks, and Touchline. Kwaito legends Trompies are also on the bill, ensuring the full spectrum of South African street culture is represented.
As the organizers perfectly stated:
“This is not just a line-up. This is 20 years of culture.”
Celebrating Johannesburg’s 140-Year Milestone

This year’s event carries additional historical weight. The 20th anniversary of the festival aligns perfectly with the 140-year anniversary of Johannesburg itself. The gathering at Mary Fitzgerald Square will serve as a powerful intersection of music, identity, and urban heritage, heavily supported by the City of Joburg, Gauteng Tourism Authority, and Hennessy.
