Seun1401 on His Amapiano Journey and Crafting a Signature Sound

The Yanos Plug IG Live series continues to bring fans closer to the biggest and brightest stars in the Amapiano scene. This time, we enjoyed hosting the sensational producer and DJ, Freedom Fresko, better known as Seun1401. Hailing from Ga-Rankuwa, Pretoria, and raised in Lebowakgomo, Seun1401’s musical journey is inspiring.

Starting his music journey at just nine years old, Seun1401’s passion and dedication have propelled him into the limelight, where he now works with the biggest names in the industry, DJ Maphorisa, Kabza De Small, TNK MusiQ, and Bontle Smith, just to name a few. From producing hit tracks like Ngibolekeni and Abo Nokuthula to pioneering a fresh sound he calls ‘System,’ Seun1401 is making serious waves in the Amapiano scene.

Early Days & Musical Beginnings

Seun1401’s love for music started young. When asked about his first beat, he revealed that it was a hip-hop track. “When I started, it was with hip hop,” he reminisces. Growing up in Lebowakgomo, his surroundings heavily influenced his sound. “I used to listen to Bacardi and Kwaito, and the Bacardi sound has always been there, it was called ‘kwakwa’ back in the day.” These early experiences shaped his unique approach to production, blending elements of Bacardi and Kwaito with modern Amapiano.

Breaking into the Industry

For many young producers, breaking into the music industry can be a challenge. But for Seun1401, it was a combination of networking and talent that landed him his first big break. “My first big collab was a song called ‘Ukhome Lotto’ with Dinho, Kabza De Small, and Tumza D’kota. I met Dinho through my bro V-Touch, and after just two or three weeks of working together, we came up with the song. We managed to get Kabza De Small on it, and the rest is history!”

But even after making his mark, Seun1401 admits to having his starstruck moment in the studio. “It was DJ Maphorisa. The first time working with him, I couldn’t believe it.”

Hit Songs & The Amapiano Formula

One of Seun1401’s standout tracks, ‘Ngibolekeni,’ featuring DJ Maphorisa, Scotts Maphuma, Blxckie, and LeeMckrazy, became an instant fan favourite. The story behind it? A completely organic studio session. “It was just a random day, and I was in the studio with DJ Maphorisa. We made the track, and it was so good that Maphorisa called in Blxckie, LeeMckrazy, and Scotts Maphuma. We made magic with the gents.”

So what’s the secret ingredient to a successful Amapiano hit? According to Seun1401, it’s a mix of vibe, the log drum, and relatable context. “The log drum plays an important role, but people also need to connect with the music emotionally.”

Defining the ‘Seun1401 Sound’

When asked which song best represents his sound, Seun1401 didn’t hesitate. “Uyaphapha.’ That’s the new sound I’m working on, and we call it System” His latest track, ‘Uyaphapha Marn,’ is already making waves. “We started Uyaphapha last year with TNK MusiQ, and then we linked up with DJ Maphorisa to collaborate. Later, we recorded with Scotts Maphuma and Kabelo Sings.”

Studio Habits & Personal Favorites

Every artist has their unique studio rituals, and for Seun1401, one thing is a must: Hubbly. “I can’t produce without a bubbly (Shisha pipe),” he laughs.

On a personal note, his favourite South African dish is braai, and when it comes to music, he currently has an unreleased track with LeeMak and Duppy on repeat.

His dream venue to perform at? PainoHub. And if he could master any instrument, it would be the saxophone.

Challenges & Advice for Upcoming Producers

Success doesn’t come overnight, and Seun1401 has had his fair share of struggles. “I finished my matric in 2022, and in 2023, I took a gap year to focus on music. But nothing happened. There was no movement.” However, he stayed persistent, and eventually, opportunities came knocking.

For young producers trying to break into the industry, his advice is clear: “Come up with your sound. Be different.” In an era where many artists follow trends, originality is what will set you apart.

What’s Next for Seun1401?

Seun1401 has no plans of slowing down. He’s currently working on an EP with Kabelo Sings and LeeMak. With Amapiano gaining international recognition, he sees the genre going fully global in the next five years.

And finally, a little fun to wrap things up: a game of Marry, Kill, or Smash. Seun1401’s picks? “I’d marry Mawhoo, kill DBN Gogo, and smash Tisetso.”

Final Thoughts Seun1401’s story is about resilience, talent, and staying true to one’s sound. From humble beginnings in Lebowakgomo to working with Amapiano’s biggest names, his journey is far from over. With new music on the way and an ever-growing fanbase, the future looks bright for this rising star.
