ALBUM REVIEW: UMCULO BY BASSIE

Bassie’s debut album, Umculo, is a resounding declaration of her artistic identity. At just 21 years old, the rising star has woven her narrative into a 12-track masterpiece that seamlessly blends soulful Amapiano grooves with heartfelt storytelling. Released on December 6, Umculo invites listeners to journey through Bassie’s world, where music acts as both a diary and a medium for healing.
BASSIE’S MUSICAL JOURNEY
Born Basetsana Maluleke in Windmill Park, Boksburg, Bassie’s love affair with music began at an early age. Her formative years were shaped by listening to pop icons like Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Pink on TV, transcribing their lyrics to learn the craft of songwriting. Her first recorded song, captured in a high school Afrikaans class, ignited her dream of becoming a superstar. Despite modest beginnings, Bassie’s determination saw her competing in local talent shows like Ekurhuleni Got Talent and eventually collaborating with industry heavyweights like MFR Souls, Kabza De Small, and DJ Maphorisa.

For Bassie, music is not just a career but a deeply personal journey. She describes her sound as ‘soulful Amapiano,’ a style characterized by its emotional depth and timeless appeal. In her own words, music serves as her secret diary, a place to express emotions that words often fail to capture. This philosophy is evident throughout Umculo, where each track resonates with authenticity and raw emotion.

PRODUCTION AND THEMES
Produced over two months, Umculo is a testament to Bassie’s meticulous approach and her drive to maintain creative momentum. The album seamlessly fuses genres, offering praise and worship vibes alongside tracks meant for the dancefloor. The production quality is polished yet retains the rawness that makes Amapiano so relatable.
Bassie’s decision to feature artists she admires, such as Azana, Soa Mattrix, and Mashudu, reflects her respect for the genre and its community. While she faced challenges in securing all her desired collaborations, her ability to adapt and deliver a cohesive project is commendable.

At its core, Umculo is an exploration of music as a life force. The title track, Umculo, encapsulates this theme by posing existential questions about life without music. Each song serves as a chapter in Bassie’s diary. Whether it’s celebrating personal victories, expressing heartbreak, or finding solace in spirituality.
Bassie’s storytelling reaches its pinnacle in tracks like “Kwelanga,” where she transforms pain into art. Her ability to convey complex emotions without explicit details creates a universal appeal, allowing listeners to find their own stories within her lyrics.
