COTTON FEST 2025: WE NEVER DIE. WE MULTIPLY.

Johannesburg, South Africa – On Saturday, April 26th, 2025, The Station in Newtown, Johannesburg, transformed into a hub of youth energy and creative expression as Cotton Fest returned for another unforgettable edition. This music and lifestyle festival, a cornerstone of South Africa’s cultural calendar, once again celebrated the rich tapestry of local talent across music, art, fashion, and sport.
“THE FACULTY OF SCIENCE”: UNPACKING THE THEME
Operating under the theme “The Faculty of Science,” Cotton Fest 2025 offered a unique perspective on the creative process, highlighting the scientific principles behind music, sound, and rhythm. This innovative theme added an intellectual layer to the festivities, encouraging attendees to consider the intricate connections between creativity and science.
A STAGE FOR EVERY SOUND
True to its reputation, Cotton Fest 2025 boasted an electrifying lineup that spanned the breadth of South African musical talent. Across three stages, both established heavyweights and rising stars delivered captivating performances. From the infectious rhythms of Amapiano and the hard-hitting bars of hip hop to the soulful melodies of R&B and the driving beats of Gqom, there was a sound to satisfy every ear.
The full lineup, featuring a diverse array of artists including 016 Banger Boyz, 031 Choppa, 25k, A-Reece, Big Zulu, Cassper Nyovest, DBN Gogo, DJ Zinhle, K.O., Kabza De Small, Makhadzi, Moozlie, Nadia Nakai, Sjava, Shekhinah, Vigro Deep, Focalistic, Joey XL, Toss, Benny Chill, and many more, ensured non-stop entertainment throughout the day. The lineup was packed with Mzansi’s finest, covering every genre from rap to dance, amapiano to R&B, ensuring attendees would be dancing, vibing, and enjoying the best of South African music all day long.
A MOMENT OF DISAPPOINTMENT? : THE SCOTTS MAPHUMA PERFORMANCE
While the festival was largely a triumph, not every performance landed with the audience. Amapiano star Scotts Maphuma faced negative reviews following his set on Saturday, April 26th. Despite having Toss and both artists having a loyal fanbase, their performance was met with mostly silence after an initially enthusiastic introduction. Online reactions from local netizens were critical, with many expressing disappointment, especially after Scotts Maphuma has been in deep waters with fans.
MORE THAN MUSIC: A CULTURAL MOVEMENT
Cotton Fest has evolved far beyond a simple music festival; it’s a cultural movement that celebrates the multifaceted creativity of South African youth. The 2025 edition was a testament to this, seamlessly blending musical performances with other vibrant lifestyle elements.
The festival grounds became a walking fashion show, with attendees, affectionately known as “Cotton Eaters,” showcasing bold and unapologetic streetwear. Style was a form of self-expression, and Cotton Fest continues to be the stage where local street fashion and identity collide. Collaborations with local designers and stylists underscored Cotton Fest’s commitment to supporting the local fashion industry.
Beyond the music and fashion, Cotton Fest embraced other aspects of youth culture, including sport. A standout moment was the Mini Ramp Jam skateboarding competition, hosted by the Perfect Weather Skate Foundation. This crossover of cultures added an unexpected layer of energy and reminded attendees of the diversity and depth the festival brings each year. Shoutouts to Dada Marumo and the crew for keeping the skate culture alive and thriving within the festival space.

The festival also featured other popular elements like a retail fashion store and “The Tuckshop,” a popular spot within the festival, providing attendees with opportunities to engage with and support local brands and businesses.
COTTON FEST’S SIGNIFICANCE FOR AMAPIANO
Amapiano has become a dominant force in South African music and youth culture, and Cotton Fest plays a crucial role in its continued growth and visibility. The festival provides a massive platform for Amapiano artists, both established and emerging, to connect with a large and enthusiastic audience.

Including numerous Amapiano acts in the lineup reflects the genre’s immense popularity and its central place in the cultural landscape that Cotton Fest celebrates. While the mixed reaction to one particular performance serves as a reminder of the constant need for artists to deliver engaging sets, the overall presence of Amapiano at Cotton Fest underscores its vital contribution to the festival’s energy and its status as a key genre shaping the sound of South African youth. Cotton Fest offers Amapiano artists an essential space to perform, innovate, and solidify their connection with their fanbase, and we, as the Yanos Plug, were honoured to be there.
