SCOTTS MAPHUMA ON FAME, PRIVACY AND FAN EXPECTATIONS: “I DIDN’T WANT TO BE FAMOUS”

Amapiano superstar Scotts Maphuma, whose real name is Mpho Lebajoa, has sparked widespread debate after discussing his discomfort with fame and fan interactions. In a candid interview on L-Tido’s podcast, the ‘Uyaphapha Marn’ hitmaker revealed that he never aspired to celebrity status and struggles with the loss of privacy that comes with stardom.
His unfiltered remarks have divided fans, with some criticising his attitude while others defend his right to personal boundaries. Here’s a deep dive into Maphuma’s perspective on fame, fan entitlement, and maintaining authenticity in the spotlight.
“I DIDN’T WANT TO BE FAMOUS”: SCOTTS MAPHUMA’S STRUGGLE WITH BEING A CELEBRITY
Scotts Maphuma has become one of Amapiano’s biggest stars, but his rise to fame hasn’t been something he actively sought.
“I didn’t want to be a celebrity. I didn’t want to be famous. I’m not that kind of person. I love my space,” he admitted on the podcast.
For Maphuma, the constant demands of fame, particularly fan requests for photos and videos, have become overwhelming. He emphasised that while he appreciates his supporters, he doesn’t believe celebrities owe fans unlimited access to their personal lives.
“I don’t think any celebrity owes anyone. I live according to God. No one made me reach where I am today, and no one can remove me.”
“YOU’RE NOT ENTITLED TO MY ATTENTION.”
One of the most contentious points in Maphuma’s discussion was his stance on fan interactions. He explained that while he doesn’t mind taking pictures occasionally, he refuses to feel pressured when he’s not in the mood.
“If I don’t want to take a picture, then I don’t want to. I don’t feel like it. People need to understand I am a human being, and they are not entitled to my attention.”
He recounted instances where fans labelled him “rude” for declining photos, even when he was dealing with personal struggles, such as the recent passing of his grandfather.
“My grandad passed away recently, and I couldn’t even go out to buy a T-shirt because people would approach me for photos. Will they understand that I’m not in the right headspace?”
PUBLIC BACKLASH AND SCOTT’S UNAPOLOGETIC RESPONSE
Following the podcast, Maphuma faced heavy criticism on social media, with some fans accusing him of being ungrateful and arrogant. Instead of backing down, he responded in true artist fashion, with a freestyle.
In an Instagram Live session, he dropped a track titled “Bathi Une Attitude” (“They Say You Have an Attitude”), directly addressing the backlash. The freestyle further fueled debates, with some fans siding with him while others doubled down on their disapproval.
Critics argued that without fans, artists wouldn’t succeed, but Maphuma maintained his position:
“If you want to listen to my music, you listen. If you don’t, you don’t. No one owes anyone anything in life.”
AN INTROVERT IN THE SPOTLIGHT?
Maphuma described himself as an introvert who values his privacy. Unlike many artists who thrive on public attention, he prefers a low-key lifestyle.
“I don’t do clubbing. It’s not my vibe. I need a very good reason to go out.”
He also addressed the changes in his personal life, particularly how women treat him differently now that he’s famous.
“When you become famous, girls start looking at you differently. But I don’t have money, I’m broke. Don’t waste your time with me.” (Laughs)
Despite his humorous take, Maphuma made it clear that he doesn’t seek validation from external approval.

INDUSTRY RELATIONSHIPS: NO BEEF WITH DJ MAPHORISA
Amid the controversy, Maphuma also clarified his relationship with DJ Maphorisa, dismissing rumours of any rift.
“There’s no beef. Phori is like a good older brother who wants us to succeed. He helps talented guys and polishes their skills.“
He also listed his Top 5 Amapiano artists, with Kabza De Small taking the number one spot, a choice that sparked its debates among fans.
“I’M N0T CRUEL, I’M JUST HONEST”
As the interview concluded, Maphuma reiterated that his bluntness shouldn’t be mistaken for arrogance. “I’m not cruel. I just tell the truth. If I don’t want to do something, I won’t, and I don’t care if people don’t understand.”
He expressed love for South Africa but urged fans to see artists as human beings with their own struggles. “I love my country, but fans should also think about us, not just themselves.”
STANDING FIRM: A DIVIDED PUBLIC OPINION
Public response to Maphuma’s stance remains divided. Some fans believe that, as a public figure whose success partly relies on public support, he should be more accommodating. Others argue that celebrities have every right to protect their personal space and mental health.
Some social media users, however, caution that while setting boundaries is essential, how those boundaries are communicated matters. A balance between personal well-being and professional courtesy could be crucial for Maphuma’s continued success.
IS MAPHUMA A STAR WHO REFUSES TO CONFORM?
Scotts Maphuma’s unfiltered honesty has made him one of the most polarising figures in Amapiano. While some view his stance as ungrateful, others respect his boundaries and authenticity.
Whether fans continue to support him or not, one thing is clear: Scotts Maphuma won’t compromise his peace for fame.
